It was a strange feeling to stand in the rain and count down the minutes before the match was called off - JOY

Three years ago, in a rainy May evening in Kolkata, we lost a game to CSK by four runs on the Duckworth Lewis scale. The last ball before rain stopped play on that CSK innings was a high catch to long leg, which we dropped – had we taken it KKR would have won. So, when rain came during the Chennai match, all the old KKR staff had their hearts in their mouths. Fortunately, this time rain did not cost us a match. It was a strange feeling to stand in the rain and count down the minutes before the match was called off – the last thing KKR needed was a revised target in two or three overs where luck could play a huge factor.
What makes a good leader? Our captain always talks about great teams - not great captains. But it really helps to have a captain who can walk up to Brett after the Kochi match and tell him he would surely win the next one for us. A captain who can admit his mistake to a player and get on with it. For most players honesty and sincerity of purpose go a long way in making them feel comfortable, and in this respect Gautam Gambhir definitely leads from the front.
We had a sponsor function that evening and it was fantastic to watch SRK’s replies to compere Vikram Sathaye’s loaded questions. And young Eoin Morgan was also excellent with his repartee- a career in media definitely awaits after his stint with cricket.
The next day there was a fun sports quiz – and the participants were questioned by the likes of Kallis, Boucher, Tiwary, Balaji, Shakib and Dav Whatmore. It’s unbelievable, the kind of things people know about their favourite cricketers. An eleven year old actually identified Jacques Kallis’s favourite movie cartoon character – ‘Buzz Lightyear’ from ‘Toy Story’. The things fans know!
